IMPACT Works: More than a Certificate

When we first started talking about IMPACT Works, the idea sounded fairly simple.
Help people earn Google Career Certificates. Help them build new skills. Help them find better job opportunities.
Simple, right?
Well… yes.
And also absolutely not.
Because anytime you combine technology, online learning, busy adults, forgotten passwords, temperamental laptops, and me trying to keep track of everybody at once, things are bound to get interesting.
And they have.
But that is also what has made IMPACT Works so special.

So, What Is IMPACT Works?
IMPACT Works is a workforce development program offered through IMPACT Learning Center. It gives adults in Jackson County the opportunity to earn Google Career Certificates in areas such as Project Management, IT Support, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing and E-commerce, UX Design, and more.
These are not “sit through one class, get a piece of paper, and never think about it again” certificates.
These programs require real work.
There are videos, assignments, quizzes, projects, deadlines, and occasionally a participant staring at the computer screen as though the computer has personally betrayed them.
Honestly, I have also stared at a computer that way.
More than once.
Participants work through their courses over several months, with support from IMPACT along the way. We help with technology, resumes, career planning, interview preparation, and figuring out what comes next after the certificate is complete.
Because earning the certificate is important.
Knowing what to do with it is just as important.
Learning New Skills Is Not Always Pretty
One thing I love about IMPACT Works is that it brings together people from all different backgrounds.
Some participants come in already feeling fairly comfortable with technology.
Others come in looking at Google Drive like it is a mysterious cloud floating somewhere above Scottsboro.
We have had forgotten passwords.
We have had login issues.
We have had laptops that decided they needed an update at the exact worst possible moment.
We have had people accidentally close the tab they had been working in for an hour.
We have had the classic moment where someone says, “I don’t know what I did,” and I say, “That’s okay,” while silently hoping I can figure out what they did.
Sometimes I can.
Sometimes we both just start clicking things.
That is called teamwork.
But underneath all the funny moments is something much bigger.
It takes courage to walk into a room and admit that you do not know how to do something.
It takes even more courage to keep trying after you get frustrated.
Our participants have done exactly that.
They have learned new programs, completed difficult assignments, balanced work and family responsibilities, and kept moving forward even when life did what life often does—showed up uninvited and made everything more complicated.
The Moment It Becomes Real
There is something incredibly special about watching someone complete a certificate.
At the beginning, the goal can feel very far away.
Participants are looking at an entire course filled with modules, assignments, and deadlines. It can feel overwhelming.
Then, little by little, the progress begins to add up.
One module becomes five.
Five becomes ten.
The person who once said, “I’m not good with computers,” starts explaining something to someone else.
The participant who was not sure they could finish begins asking what certificate they should earn next.
And then comes the moment when the certificate appears on the screen.
That moment never gets old.
Sometimes there are tears.
Sometimes there is cheering.
Sometimes there is a picture taken immediately.
Sometimes there are approximately seventeen pictures taken because somebody blinked, somebody was looking the wrong way, or I decided the lighting was terrible.
Again, teamwork.
Our first IMPACT Works graduation was more than a ceremony.
It was proof.
Proof that people are capable of learning new things.
Proof that opportunities can change lives.
Proof that adults in our community are willing to invest in themselves when someone is willing to invest in them.
And proof that no matter how many times technology tries to defeat us, we can still win in the end.
More Than a Workforce Program
IMPACT Works is about employment, but it is also about confidence.
It is about watching someone sit a little taller after completing a difficult course.
It is about helping someone update a resume and realize they have more experience than they thought.
It is about showing people that their past does not have to determine their future.
A person may have been out of school for years.
They may have had to put their own goals on hold while raising children, working, caregiving, or simply surviving.
They may feel like they missed their chance.
IMPACT Works exists to remind them that they did not.
There is no expiration date on learning something new.
There is no age limit on changing careers.
And there is no rule that says you have to have everything figured out before you begin.
Thank goodness, because most of us would still be waiting.
What Comes Next?
IMPACT Works continues to grow.
We are working to connect participants not only with training, but also with real employment opportunities, stronger resumes, professional portfolios, interview preparation, and pathways into higher education.
We want every participant to leave with more than a certificate.
We want them to leave with a plan.
We want them to understand how their new skills connect to jobs in Jackson County and the surrounding areas.
We want employers to see the talent already living right here in our community.
Most importantly, we want participants to believe that they belong in those new opportunities.
Because they do.
IMPACT Works is still growing, still learning, and occasionally still resetting passwords.
But it is working.
One certificate, one new skill, one opportunity, and one very determined person at a time.
